Vimala D. Phongsavanh


Vimala D. Phongsavanh is born, raised, and settled in the City of Woonsocket, RI. Vimala is an organizer, fundraiser, and rabble-rouser. She currently serves as the Assistant Director at Common Cause Rhode Island. Previously, Vimala served as the director of programs at the Center for Southeast Asians; a youth organizer at NeighborWorks Blackstone Valley; and an AmeriCorps VISTA at the Asian Community Development Corporation. Vimala was the first Lao American elected to a school committee in the country and served as the committee’s chairwoman.  She holds a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Rhode Island, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Providence College. Her mission is to empower and organize all communities to recognize and exercise their own political power through education and civic engagement strategies that embrace democracy, system level transformations, and racial equity.
