New Leaders Council Rhode Island Graduates Twenty

PROVIDENCE  —  June 6, 2015, in a ceremony held at Providence City Hall, The Rhode Island Chapter of the New Leaders Council (NLC) announced that 20 fellows and future leaders of Rhode Island had graduated from the New Leaders Training Institute. The Rhode Island Chapter began offering the Institute in 2012, and nearly 70 fellows have completed the program since.

Secretary Gorbea meets with NLC RI, April 2015.                                                Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea and NLC RI fellows, April 2015.

Chapter founder and board member Margaux Morisseau said, “The NLC Institute is a tremendous opportunity to bring together young Rhode Islanders who want to make a difference around the values of equity, inclusiveness, and hope. You can find our members and alumni throughout this state bringing change in local, state, and federal government, elected office, non-profits, education, and business.”

This year’s class of fellows hailed from across the state and even included candidates from neighboring Bristol County, Massachusetts. Graduate Paul Tavarez summed up his experience in the program as “transformative,” and added, “The amazing fellows and board members of the NLC Institute have really inspired me. Not only have they given me the confidence and skills to attain my goals, but they’ve also helped me discover a vast a creative community of professionals right here in my own state.”

In her address to the graduates, Board Co-Chair Charon Rose emphasized the community aspect of the organization: “NLC is about empowering people to pursue their passions and at the same time to confront our human challenges of poverty, ignorance, and hopelessness. NLC is about engaging in a collaborative effort that benefits us all.”
