New Leaders Council

Making Waves in RI, Where to Start

Do you have this crazy idea that your life has a purpose and making a positive impact on your community (and society) is more important than, say, swimming in a vault of gold coins? (Duck Tales, people!)

If so, the biggest challenge is finding a place to begin, a diving board to leap off of and cannon ball your way into making some change. The great news is that you’re in Rhode Island, where our sheer size guarantees that with a little elbow grease, a lot of heart, and a small network of progressive leaders (hint, hint), you can make a huge impact! The smaller the pool, the larger the impact – got it?

The 2016 New Leaders Council (NLC) Institute is where you belong.

New Leaders Council (NLC) of RI was founded by people like you: go-getters, dreamers, Rhode Islanders that care about their families and their community. Almost 5-years later, our family has grown to nearly 100 alumni leveraging their talents across the landscape, from start-ups to city hall. We’re the premiere political entrepreneurship training program in Rhode Island and we have a challenge for you: Come meet us. We’ll be chatting over a cup of Joe on Saturday, October 17th from 11:00am-2:00pm (details below). And in case you’re concerned the event will be like a giant group interview or an elaborate scene from the Experimenter, let me introduce you to Tatiana.

Tatiana Baena is a newly minted 2015 NLC Institute Alum. About this time last year, a co-worker was rooting for Tatiana to apply and told her the coffee “mixer” would be a fantastic event.

“I hadn’t applied yet,” Tatiana shared, “part of me thought I’d be out of place.”

Tatiana was a force for sure, but she wondered how she’d match up against other young leaders who were more involved politically. Having thrived in Central Falls since emigrating from Colombia at a young age, the selection committee easily recognized her tenacity and leadership potential.

“I went to the coffee hour, spoke to a bunch of people, and it really opened my eyes. I thought, ‘you can do this, this is something you really need to do!’”

A year later, Tatiana now sits on the Board of NLC-RI and hopes to continue to see an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse group of young leaders in the 2016 cohort. “The institute really empowers you, it’s a great way to grow and figure out how to help your community.” Tatiana’s story is why New Leaders Council was created, to recruit Fellows outside traditional power structures and equip them with the skills necessary to be civic leaders in their communities and workplaces. Are you ready to hone your life’s purpose, sharpen your leadership skills, and make waves in the ocean state? Start your application today and we’ll see you on Saturday, October 17th.
